In a world of increasing crsis and stress – from global threats like polarisation and climate change to more localised pressures around housing and cost of living – what does it take for people to make change in the cities that they live?

Our host Amanda Tattersall and her colleague Kurt Iveson have been asking this question for many years, conducting long term research in five cities (Cape Town, Austin, Barcelona, Sydney and Hong Kong) and mapping over 1500 examples of social change in cities across the world.

The result is a book – People Power in Cities (published by Oxford University Press) – that argues that effective change making is more complicated than relying on a single strategy or single approach. Instead, they identify a range of strategic dilemmas that people face in cities and a series of strategies that people use to build power to address them.

In this chat they unpack what they found, hosted by Vafa Chazavi, also from the University of Sydney.
