Chris Pepin-Neff – ChangeMaker Chat – Rethinking Shark Attacks

What if the stories we tell about sharks are wrong? What might it take to change them?

The idea that sharks are predators hunting humans feels like common sense. It is on the big screen in movies like Jaws and it is tragically affirmed in fatal shark encounters that have increased in the past few years.

Should we be scared? And if so, is the response to kill these rouge sharks?

In this conversation with Associate Professor Chris Pepin-Neff (University of Sydney), a world expert on public policy and human shark encounters – we explore the fascinating story behind the story of “shark attacks” and how recent, and unscientific the story is.

We then look at the myths that sit behind current public policy around sharks, and what it might look like to have a more honest approach to beach patrols, swimming and the presence of sharks in the ocean.
